As a mechanical engineering company with a long tradition, Flender is well known in the field of gearboxes and couplings. Many of our employees have a technical, industrial or commercial background. However, we also provide in-house support in the areas of e.g., IT and legal.
We are also steadily gaining more expertise in legal and compliance and are focusing on training and development here as well. In today's article, Ms. Claudia Cader shares her experiences at Flender during her legal traineeship. Read the interview with Ms. Cader in the following.

What is a legal traineeship and how does a legal traineeship work?

A legal trainee is a training period for German lawyers. After successfully completing the first state law examination, you can apply to become a legal trainee. After a possible waiting period, one starts as a legal trainee in a certain court district and gets to know different tasks. In this way, you learn how to put the theoretical knowledge you gained at university into practice. In the process, you complete various stations. As a rule, you start at a court with a judge. After that, you go to the public prosecutor's office, to the administrative service, to a lawyer and finally to the so-called "elective station". The last station is relatively free and one can choose an activity. Between the lawyer's station and the elective station, the written examinations for the second state law examination take place. After the elective station, there is the oral examination (if you have passed it in writing). After this, you have passed the second state exam and are considered a fully qualified lawyer.

How did you hear about Flender and why was Flender interesting for you?

I became aware of Flender because I wanted to find something different for my elective station. The previous stations had not given me the impression that this was to be my career path. That's why I was looking for new jobs where lawyers work. That's how I came across corporate counsel. Due to my personal connection to Bocholt, I was already familiar with Flender and it seemed to me at the time to be a diverse and comprehensive opportunity to complete my elective station in my legal clerkship.

What tasks did you take care of?

I was able to perform many different tasks at Flender and work with many different colleagues. I got to know everything from the classic contract review to general research and drafting letters to clients and business partners. In the process, I was able to express my personal interests. It was particularly interesting that I was also able to take part in various contract negotiations and work internationally with colleagues.

What were your experiences so far and what is your impression of Flender?

In many trainee positions, you often feel like more of a nuisance, since you are naturally more work for your trainer. At Flender, I was particularly impressed by the fact that I often had the opportunity to work out issues from scratch with my supervisor and colleagues. I never had the feeling of being a burden. Even asking questions was never taken as disturbing. The combination of legal knowledge and practical implementation for the company (also from an economic point of view) was explained to me in detail. This allowed me to develop a general understanding of the job and see what was important. In addition, I was quite free in my work and had the opportunity to contribute myself.

What's next for you now?

Since the end of my practical phase at Flender, I have also successfully completed the oral examination. So, I can now also call myself a "fully qualified lawyer". Fortunately, I got the opportunity to continue working for Flender. I moved here from the beautiful Rhineland and will now also become a Flenderaner.

For Flender, the employees are one of the most important components for consistency, success and further development. That is why the further development and promotion of young talents is also very important to us.

We wish Ms. Cader lots of fun and success as a Flenderaner!
