Our Approach to Sustainability

Sustainability is a guiding principle of our actions. We incorporate environmental and social considerations into our business decisions, including selected product lines and our supply chain. For selected products, we consider aspects such as energy efficiency and service life. We expect our suppliers to comply with defined standards and assess their compliance based on risk.

Sustainable
Development Goals

The United Nationsʼ (UNʼs) 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ensure sustainable development in ecological, economic and social areas of activity worldwide. Flender’s sustainability strategy is aligned with those global goals.

Our gear units, generators and couplings support applications related to selected United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our components are used in numerous wind turbines worldwide and help enable the generation of energy from wind power (SDG 7). Our products support applications in energy and industrial infrastructure. In our production processes, we consider factors including energy consumption and resource efficiency (SDGs 9 and 12).

We move the world towards a sustainable future

We have started our sustainability journey a few years ago and have implemented several projects since then to map our baseline. In our Sustainability Report we are updating and informing you about our sustainability strategy, initiatives and corresponding progress. We illustrate how we reduce our footprint in terms of carbon, waste, water and materials, and minimize our environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks.

WINNER OF THE 16TH GERMAN SUSTAINABILITY AWARD 2024

Flender was named a winner of the German Sustainability Award in the mechanical engineering category. The award recognizes our activities in the area of sustainability.

ECOVADIS RATES FLENDER AGAIN IN THE TOP 1 PERCENT OF THE MOST SUSTAINABLE COMPANIES

Flender has again been awarded the Platinum Medal by EcoVadis, an internationally recognized provider of sustainability ratings. Having already been awarded the gold medal in our first application in 2022, we have now received the highest possible award for the third time in a row. This is all the more remarkable given that the threshold for the platinum medal has significantly increased. Since the last assessment, Flender's overall score has risen from 83 to 89. In all four areas – environment, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement – the results have improved. Together with our partners, we are working to develop our sustainability activities further and implement corresponding measures.

FLENDER HONORED AS A FINALIST AT THE DENA ENERGY EFFICIENCY AWARD

The Flender site in Bocholt has been nominated for the prestigious Energy Efficiency Award of the German Energy Agency GmbH (dena) with an innovative heating system. The central element of the new heating system is a powerful heat pump that redirects previously unused waste heat from 26 hardening furnaces back into the heating circuit. This results in annual savings of 3.6 million kWh of natural gas and 654 tons of CO₂. The project has been nominated for the Energy Efficiency Award of dena in the category "From clever to digital! - The range of energy efficiency". Out of over 130 applications for all four award categories, Flender made it to the top 3 in the nominated category.

Joining the UN Global Compact and committing to responsible business practices. 

Flender has incorporated the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact into its strategies. As a participant, we commit to respecting human and labour rights, protecting the environment and combating corruption in all its forms.

Our Emissions Targets Validated by the SBTi

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated Flender’s defined emissions reduction targets against science-based criteria. All in all, we have committed to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2045. Our near-term aim is to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 63% by FY2030 from a FY2021 base year and lower scope 3 GHG emissions 51.6% per ton of sold product within the same timeframe. We are proud to take these steps toward a net-zero future.

Strategy

In short, we shall be The Partner of Choice for a Sustainable Future. To ensure that this corporate vision becomes a livable reality, we have set up a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Board. The chairman of the CSR Board is Andreas Evertz, Flender Group CEO.

The CSR Board will make central strategic decisions for the sustainable development of Flender and will set non-financial corporate goals.

ENVIRONMENT
and ENERGY

Our products are used in applications that contribute to generating energy from wind power and are therefore related to UN Sustainable Development Goal 7. Flender has supplied gear units and generators for wind turbines that convert wind power into electricity for more than 40 years.

We have implemented measures to reduce energy demand and consider energy consumption and resource efficiency in our production processes.

SUPPLIERS
and SUPPLY CHAIN

Our approach to sustainability also covers the supply chain. We expect our suppliers to comply with defined human rights and environmental standards and assess their compliance based on risk.

Sustainability aspects are also being increasingly incorporated into our purchasing processes: for example, increased transparency with regard to CO2 emissions. Here we have already carried out an assessment with selected suppliers (UN SDG #12 and 13). Furthermore, we are working with our suppliers to reduce wastage (UN SDG # 12). An example of this is the recyclable packaging project with our supplier Schaeffler (see also "Eco-Friendly Packing System").

Responsible Sourcing of Conflict Minerals

We take a risk-based approach to sourcing raw materials while considering defined ESG criteria. We expect our suppliers to comply with relevant standards for minerals from conflict-affected and high-risk areas and assess this as part of our risk-based due diligence.

Our solutions are used in numerous applications worldwide. Our Winergy brand is an established supplier of components for wind turbines. With our gear units, couplings and generators, we support the conversion of wind energy into electricity and, in turn, reliable energy infrastructure (UN SDG 9). We also continue to develop our products and solutions to unlock potential efficiency gains in energy generation.

We offer customers in various industries high-quality products and a comprehensive range of service and maintenance options. When developing our solutions further, we consider aspects of resource use throughout the product life cycle.
